 Selfportraits

These are examples of students' works from the project "selfportraits" (students aged 11 to 13). It began with the study and sketching of  facial proportions. The students then studied historical and contemporary portraits and selfportraits to develop an understanding of the symbolism of objects within a picture. Having gained an awareness of their interests and talents the students arranged and photographed their selfportraits with the appropiate symbols. This became the basis for the collage. The realistic sketching of their portrait with the help of a photograph satisfied students' interest in giving a realistic picture of themslves and improving their ability to observe and sketch. The collage then took them one step further in a direction towards abstraction.
